"D" is for Dump Runs

While Danny grew up going to the dump quite frequently as a kid since he grew up in rural Mariposa...Katie didn't have that much experience with the sanitation services. Posting this partly because I think it gave some great insight into America's consumption practices. Great place to take kids on a field trip to teach the meaning behind the infamous "reduce, reuse, recycle". Two parts to this entry (1) dumps are a good example of our over-consumption, waste, and dependence on China. (2) Dump runs make you feel like you've accomplished something.

We saw a woman throw away a perfectly good mattress! Danny asked her if she had ever thought about donating that to a social service agency or to the homeless shelter and she said, "no she had not thought of that" and "that's a good idea"! Shocking! Second, in terms of a large-scale remodel-the projects seem to move very slowly. In retrospect, things are moving along pretty quickly but not as quickly as demo-ing and then taking it to the dump. Within that day you can see changes and best of all, the 1970s wall paper has "disappeared" into dump.
